Questions by the Sages

Context:

At the close of Dvāpāra Yuga, after Lord Krishna departed from this planet, the age of Kali began. Understanding the challenges that Kali Yuga would bring, a group of exalted sages gathered with deep concern for the welfare of humanity.

Under the leadership of Śaunaka Muni, the sages assembled at Naimiśāraṇya, a sacred place, to perform a thousand-year yajña. Their purpose was to counteract the negative effects of Kali Yuga and to uplift people in general.

Sūta Gosvāmī Takes the Vyāsāsana:

One day, after completing their morning duties, the sages respectfully invited Sūta Gosvāmī to occupy the Vyāsāsana, the seat of the speaker. Recognising his qualification and humility, they approached him with reverence and curiosity.

The Six Fundamental Questions:

The sages then placed before Sūta Gosvāmī six essential questions, which form the foundation of the entire Śrīmad Bhāgavatam:

  1. What is the absolute and ultimate good for all living beings?

  2. What is the essence of all scriptures (śāstras)?

  3. Why did Lord Krishna appear on this planet as the son of Devakī?

  4. Please narrate the divine adventures of Lord Krishna.

  5. Describe the various pastimes of His different incarnations.

  6. After Lord Krishna left this world, where did Dharma (religious principles) take shelter?

Significance of the Chapter

This opening chapter sets the tone and direction of the Bhāgavatam. The sages’ questions are not motivated by curiosity alone but by compassion for humanity in Kali Yuga.
