Divinity and Divine Service
Context:
Sūta Gosvāmī was deeply pleased after hearing the thoughtful and sincere questions posed by the sages of Naimiśāraṇya. Appreciating their genuine desire to know the ultimate truth for the welfare of humanity, he first expressed his gratitude.
Before beginning his answers, Sūta Gosvāmī offered respectful obeisances to:
Śukadeva Gosvāmī, his guru (spiritual master)
Nara-Nārāyaṇa Ṛṣi
Mother Sarasvatī, the goddess of learning
Śrīla Vyāsadeva, the compiler of the Vedas
Focus of the Chapter:
In this chapter, Sūta Gosvāmī primarily addresses the first two questions raised by the sages:
What is the absolute and ultimate good for all living beings?
What is the essence of all scriptures (śāstras)?
The Central Teaching:
Sūta Gosvāmī explains that the ultimate goal of human life is to attain loving devotional service (bhakti) to Lord Krishna (Vāsudeva).
The purpose of life is not to maximize sense enjoyment or material achievements, but to awaken our eternal relationship with the Supreme Lord through devotion.
Sūta Gosvāmī beautifully summarizes this truth in SB 1.2.28-29:
वासुदेवपरा वेदा
वासुदेवपरा मखा: ।
वासुदेवपरा योगा
वासुदेवपरा: क्रिया: ॥ २८ ॥
वासुदेवपरं ज्ञानं
वासुदेवपरं तप: ।
वासुदेवपरो धर्मो
वासुदेवपरा गति: ॥ २९ ॥
